Church Gallery - Sept. 2010

Repairs to the Church

September 2010

The work is now complete and the re-decoration is finished. The fundraising continues however!

June 2010
Phase 2 of the restoration work is underway. Much of the damp plaster in the church caused by the leaking roof has been removed and the internal stonework is now drying out. Work starts on installing a disabled toilet in the porch area on June 21st and in early August the final work within the church will commence. This will include repairing the plasterwork, repainting and installing two modaics which were originally installed at Good Shepherd Cathedral in Ayr before it closed. These mosaics are of the Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart.

January 2010

The initial phase of the work to make the building wind and water tight is almost complete and the initial target of £17000 to pay for this has been raised.
Phase 2 of the work can now be planned which will renovate the inside of the church and funds for this will be required. You can see the results of the repair work completed so far alongside some of the 'work-in-progress' in the gallery.
Approximately £20000 is still required to provide a new toilet, renovate the electrical wiring, decorate the church and other incidental works.

November 2009

In an article in the Scottish Catholic Observer of 13th November the following has been reported:

Thousands of pounds are needed to save the church in Girvan. Parishioner Dan Lavery, who is organising the repairs said that damp had gotten into the roof and unless repairs took place at once the building could be ruined.
"The work is already underway, because the damp and damage to parts of the church were so severe we couldn't afford to wait."

In 2000 at the parish's 150 anniversary, the then Bishop of Galloway Maurice Taylor said it was both the " spiritual home of the resident Catholics and the the holiday parish of countless others who have always felt welcomed in its hospitable walls."
